Stone Canvas is:

Jason Brown – Electric and acoustic guitars, bass, soprano sax, EWI, MIDI
I want to thank The Lord our God, from Whom all music comes (Psalm 40:3), my lovely wife Tammy for the countless times I woke her in the middle of the night working on this project, David & Janna Tarbell, Matthew & Carolyn Stewart (STROWNBELLS! WOO!), Steve at Sage Audio for the outstanding mastering, Melinda Beavers for the fantastic cover art, Joe Gilder at Home Studio Corner, Bob Hartman for the guitar and inspiration, Terry Adams, Terry & Maria Janow, Mike McDade, Dan Whittemore, Bill Mitchell and my parents who first suggested that I sign up for band and then had to put up with me practicing at home.
For Parker, Weston and Colton Brown, my treasures. In memory of Pat Stafford and Larry Mallarino.

Matthew Stewart – Piano, keys, MIDI
I offer praise and thanksgiving to the Lord God Almighty for the life road that has led me to this moment. Blessed be His Name in all circumstances, good and bad. May Stone Canvas serve to glorify Him! I also thank my wife, Carolyn Stewart, for her unconditional love, support, and enthusiasm throughout this whole process. I thank my mother, Marsha Stewart, who taught me not only to play the piano but to love playing it as well. I thank my father, Richard Stewart, who made me feel important every time he stopped what he was doing to come listen to me practice. Many thanks to all of my friends and family that I just do not have room to list here. I love you all and could not have created this music without you!

Tracks:

Illusions

Illusions is the first piece we wrote. It is the culmination of many hours of experimentation in what would become our approach to writing music. This piece was our first opportunity to speak our own language, even as the music took on a life of its own.

First Principles

I once had a physics professor who, whenever I got stuck solving a problem, would say in his thick Irish brogue, “Jason, in these problems you must always remember to go back to first principles.” That advice has served well in many areas of life. Thanks, Dr. Neill. - JB

Of What Was

Don’t be sorry it’s over; instead, be glad that it happened. - JB

Haven

Haven is the result of a very stressful time in my life. Weary and under intense pressure, I sat at the piano and poured my emotions into the keys. As Haven grew, it became a refuge and a deeply personal expression of the feelings I couldn’t convey in words. Haven marks the beginning of a three-movement journey, followed by Wait and Cloudbreak. - MS

Wait

At the end of Haven it is still raining, and questions remain without easy answers. When we come to God in prayer, He frequently gives one of three responses: Yes, No, or Wait. The last is usually the most difficult…

Cloudbreak

Cloudbreak is the final resolution to the tension in Haven and the stillness in Wait. The storm has passed, and the sun is breaking through the clouds. All that remains is to close your eyes and be at peace.

For Her

For my beautiful wife, Carolyn. I love you with all that I am, always and forever. - MS

Those Who Wait

For my sister Emily and her husband Jason Jones. - JB
