Recorded in a church in the remote north-German village of Bagemühl, A Testament to Subsided Days is the solo debut from Douglas MacGregor, and the first of two EPs to be released. They are the culmination of four years of writing and intensive practice and, whether viewed from an artistic, technical, compositional or musical perspective, mark the pinnacle of an idiosyncratic style enriched by multiple genres, emotions and breathtaking musicianship. With A Testament to Subsided Days, Douglas seamlessly melds his wildly disparate influences - from the Delta blues of Skip James; the raw jazz of Albert Ayler; the virtuosic flamenco of Paco de Lucia to the counterpoint and precision of Bach - with extraordinary skill, to create a mesmerising and moving sound.
After visiting a number of spaces, German sound engineer, Sebastian Ohmert, selected the church in Bagemühl for its acoustic suitability. The results are spectacular: the spaciousness of the church is beautifully captured and is a fitting setting for Douglas' extraordinary solo live performance.
From the jazzy swing of 'Anew Named One' that could be pulled from a warped rendering of The Third Man; the intoxicating Spanish rhythm and teetering tonality of the title track, 'A Testament to Subsided Days'; the restrained and pensive lyricism of closer, 'An Unnamed One': here we have timeless music, unconstrained by limitations of technique or vision. An extraordinary beginning from what will undoubtedly be an extraordinary artist.
