“I WAS ADDICTED TO DRUGS ALL MY LIFE”
By September 2004, I was in the final stage of a long, unsuccessful battle against drug addiction. My life was in chaos – heroin addicted, homicidal and suicidal; looking back now, I’m sure I would have died soon. I was 46 years old and had moved out of my home, away from my wife of 23 years and my four year old daughter. I was losing my business and everything else that had mattered to me. I couldn’t stop using. My life could be summed up by Romans 7:15 “I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do”.
God had plans for me though. Several people performed an intervention. I agreed to go into the Teen Challenge program. That day, the absolute worst day of my life, has turned out to be the best day of my life. Within a week I found out what salvation meant, and for the first time I really felt what Paul was talking about when he wrote in Philippians 3:10-11 and said “I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead”. I have been clean since that day I entered Teen Challenge.
My life has been restored, and I am blessed beyond measure. I am reunited with my family. I have found the freedom that Paul wrote about in Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery”. I like to write and sing songs about the pain of addiction, the glory of salvation, and the need to stay in recovery. My first cd "Take This Cup" was released in March of ’07. My second cd "A Blessed Man" was released in February ’08. My third cd "Dead Man Walkin'" and our first as the Doug Hallock & BROKEN Band, was released June '09. My fourth and second band cd "Thorn" was realeased June '10. My band performed concerts in the Arizona State Prisons and throughout the United States. Listen to our message that there is freedom in Jesus Christ, no matter what your addiction might be.
