Contrapuntal music for solo guitar

Hailed as “the next big thing in the jazz world” (CityTV news), “a definite musical voice” (Guitar International), “sophisticated and accomplished” (The Toronto Star) as well as “genius” (La Presse, Montréal), guitarist and composer Alex Goodman has established himself as a major force in the jazz community. He has released three albums as a leader, of which his most recent, “Bridges” was nominated for a 2013 JUNO award for Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year. The Ottawa Citizen recognized “Bridges” as one of the top 10 Canadian jazz records of its year, and honored Alex in the article “Who makes the cutting edge for jazz in Canada?” He has toured extensively and has performed at such prestigious venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington DC, Massey Hall in Toronto and ABC Studios in New York City.

Upon completing his Bachelor of Jazz Performance at the University of Toronto he was honored as the first jazz musician to have been awarded the William and Phyllis Waters Graduating Award for the “student deemed to have the greatest potential to make an important contribution to the field of music.” In addition to winning over a dozen other national and international music awards, Alex’s quintet was also a finalist in the 2011 Grand Prix de Jazz competition at the Montreal International Jazz Festival.

Alex is an accomplished composer with over 100 original compositions and two film scores to his name. He is the recipient of a 2013 ASCAP Herb Alpert Composers Award and is releasing a book of solo guitar etudes in spring 2014. He has performed with international jazz stars such as Tim Ries, John Riley and Ron Westray as well as with the New York Ballet on guitar and American Repertory Ballet on mandolin.
