Description
Three EPs into their career, the Chicago band now presents us with their debut full-length: the period to a long sentence filled with changes, different ideas, and various approaches, concepts, and recording styles. They sound comfortable and confident.
Notes
“The phrase itself, ‘Going Away’ is an attempt to encapsulate this feeling of drifting through life like a slow, sputtering comet that leaves a trail of varying memories: sad, banal, glorious and gray,” says singer/songwriter Stephen Mulcahy. “This idea, that we are all going away is, in my opinion, the most common and significant thread of human life—we all know we are going to die and we all have to come to terms with it.”
Thematically, Honest Engines’ new album 'Going Away' reaches the darkest depths of Mulcahy’s conscious we’ve seen so far, yet Honest Engines bring us there with ease.
Honest Engines are a band that have honed their craft. They tweak microscopic sonic details from recording to recording and honestly attempt constant evolution. They sound comfortable and confident.
Mulcahy explains: “The epic melodrama that has always been our signature is definitely still prevalent, but maybe to a lesser degree because we knew this was not an EP and it had to sustain itself over 45 minutes. So we were more disciplined when it came to climaxes and big parts. There are plenty of small valley parts to equalize the huge peak parts and balance the overall feeling of the record.”
The songs on 'Going Away' are the best batch yet. Recorded sporadically over the past year and a half at guitarist Marcus Maloney’s own Ethnomusikology studio, each track was allowed the appropriate time to breath without the strict time constraints and financial burdens of traditional recording studios.
“Also, we again like to think of the record as one long story with a beginning, middle, and end.”
'Going Away' is available now via Tandem Shop.
