Notes
Gang Green was the most raucous and most explosive hardcore punk band in Boston from 1982-1986. “DROP THE NEEDLE: Boston Punk Anthology” is a new CD compilation of 5 old school Boston punk, rock and hardcore bands from the 1980’s and 1990’s. This release includes GANG GREEN’S original 1985 studio version of the classic song “Let’s Drink Some Beer”. This rare hardcore punk recording has never been available on CD before now and was co-written by Dicky Barrett from Jimmy Kimmel Live and THE MIGHTY MIGHTY BOSSTONES fame.
SMEGMA + THE NUNZ were also band members of hardcore legends GANG GREEN and THE FREEZE along with, Alec Steere, former vocalist for LEPER who were Boston’s first hardcore band in Boston around 1979-1980. Following LEPER, SMEGMA AND THE NUNZ became the most outrageous and most blasphemous live punk band in Boston around 1982-1983. For the first time, here are 5 rare demo recordings by this infamous Boston band.
Chuck Stilphen (guitar) and Walter Gustafson (drums) were members of SMEGMA + THE NUNZ, The FREEZE and also recorded with Glen Stilphen (bass) in GAN GREEN and MALLET HEAD. The Stilphen brothers also appear with SCRATCH and CELEBRITY DEATH CERTIFICATE. CELEBRITY DEATH CERTIFICATE features, Erich Thaler, from alt-metal band, STOMPBOX, who released the landmark album, "STRESS", for Columbia Records in 1994.
“DROP THE NEEDLE: Boston Punk Anthology” is dedicated to SMEGMA + THE NUNZ vocalist, Alec Steere aka “Smegma”, who was tragically hit by a train in 1999.
