Notes

When describing the Nashville based singer/songwriter, Freddy Mullins' music you could say its like, well, rather un-like anything. Sure, its possible to hear distinct moments that call out Ryan Adams, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper, and even U2, but the collective whole is a sound that is truly all his own and one that has grown remarkably since his first LP Everything In Between came out in February of 2007. His second full length album, Broken White Lines (released Dec '07), with its retrospective view on the road of Mullins' life teetered dangerously close to being a self absorbed album if it had not been a well fought (or penned) battle to make his experiences connect with the listener.

Now Mullins returns with his third full album release, Sleep Tonight. It opens solidly with "Come Home", which behind a warm blanket of acoustic guitar, piano, and strings, it focuses on a common theme in Mullins' music of decisions and consequences. Next up is the whimsical "Wishing Well", which is undoubtedly Mullins' best upbeat song since "Butterfly" and a welcome return to Mullins' folk-soul style that unfortunately was absent from Broken White Lines. Mullins clearly wanted to get back to his roots of blending soulful melodies and thoughtful lyrics together again within Sleep Tonight and the next song, "Don't Give Me Girl" pleasantly reinforces that within this album. Another album highlight is the beautiful "Blue Skies". With its hypnotic piano melody, it slowly builds to a wondrous swell that meets Mullins' one of a kind vocals proclaiming the paradoxical lyrics "Blue Skies, when you cry your tears of rain."

Once again, Freddy Mullins has produced an album that has furthered his stylish, un-styled one of a kind musical sound. Considering Mullins once again played every instrument and produced the album completely on his own, its fascinating to see his ability to continually strive for growth in his music without outside assistance. Fans of Freddy Mullins can sleep soundly tonight, "Sleep Tonight" is his' best work to date and one that marks another step forward on his musical journey.
