Album Review - "Still" - Blues in Britain Volume 1 Issue 52, April 2006
"This is an album of funk that has plenty of grunt. This is an album of grunk. Grunk is good. Not that we should get too hung up on names - Funkydory are far too talented to get pigeonholed into the nether parts of the popular music industry.
When attempting to escape from a sticky situation it helps if you can soar. With the vocals of Lorna Reilly, Funkydory can certainly do that. To power her flight into the heavens Reilly has the fearless fret-fulness of Jules Fothergill and Marc le Guerrannic, who are as adept at recognising when silence will express more than sound as they are dextrous when they do strike the strings. Driving it all, meanwhile, is Hayden Doyle's drumming, which is as sharp and well timed as a Dorothy Parker put down while being as nimble as a Russian gymnast.
Still is a far from one-dimensional album. There are periods of tenderness when you have the privilege of drifting on the wings of Reilly's singing. And then there are times when the rawness of the music grabs you by the balls and drags you into what may seem like a different dimension, but is actually that unfamiliar place called freedom. But wherever it takes you, you'll want to stay for the ride."
