Notes
The Flat Broke Band, based in Southern Illinois near St. Louis, played an eclectic mix of southern and mainstream rock, country, and blues. Their 14-song debut CD, "Flat Broke", was released May 13, 2006 and is available on CDBaby and iTunes. The band, consisting of Tim Biggs (drums, vocals) Andrea Johnson (keyboards, vocals) Michael Johnson (lead guitar, vocals) Dick Rachell (bass, vocals) and Nick Winkeler (rhythm guitar, vocals,) wrote or co-wrote all the songs on the album.
The Flat Broke Band has been in existence since 1997. The name mirrors the band member's wallets. "We were sitting around trying to come up with a band name, when someone said, 'hey, were always flat broke,' and the rest is history." says drummer Tim Biggs. The band appears regularly around the St. Louis metro east area, playing a mix of covers and originals, and they have a loyal following affectionately known as "Flat Heads".
The Flat Broke Band was formed by Jeff Kopsic & Tim Biggs. In the winter of 1997, Jason Eickelman joined the band. In March of 1998, Flat Broke played their first gig. After two other lead guitarists, Jeff Davis & Jim Riddle left, Jake Gutzler came aboard in late 1999. In 2003, Jeff Kopsic and Jason Eickelman left the band. Dick Rachell (Bass), and Nick Winkeler (Rhythm Guitar) joined the band. Jake left the band at the end of October 2004. Michael Johnson became Flat Broke's new lead guitarist. Michael brings over 20 years of playing experience to the band. In January, 2006, Michael's wife, Andrea "Ani" Johnson, joined as the newest member.
The band broke up in mid-2007 after several members moved away. Always remember their motto, though: "It's Not Just A Name, It's A Way Of Life."
