Description
This up-beat EP is both musically complex and eclectic, combining elements of gypsy, big band, rock and folk.
Notes
Flying Fox & the Hunter/Gatherers have been trolling the Winnipeg music scene since 2005. In three years they have grown from a compulsive instrument-swapping jam band to a cohesive six-piece unit of (take a deep breath) classically trained musicians playing jazz-influenced folk-rock with pop sensibilities. They have been compared to Hawksley Workman, Calexico, Weather Report, Beirut, and the Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack.
Flying Fox shows are high energy and bring crowds to their feet. With music ranging from sing-along pop songs to adventurous funk-influenced compositions in odd time signatures, they appeal to both the sophisticated musician and less scrutinizing dancer. As one recent show attendee put it, Flying Fox "has this unique, enticing sound that unexpectedly pulsates throughout the room with all its exuberance."
At the helm of Flying Fox and the Hunter Gatherers’ sound is Jesse Krause (House of Doc), whose enchanting song writing, vocals and guitar work lead the musical way. Bucky Driedger's no-nonsense approach to hitting the drums serves well his passion for good, listenable music. Lindsey Collins' precise and spirited bass playing is arguably the glue that holds all things together. Darren Grunau tickles the black and white synthetic polymer with joyful ingenuity. Add the punch and beauty of brass blowers Paul Schmidt (trombone) and Steve T. Kay (trumpet) to the foray, and you've got a band that doesn’t fit in a mini-van.
