Description

Unique arrangements of Carols from all over the world, and serene original compositions by Grace Choi.

Notes

I am a life time musician who is classically trained in piano, composition, and conducting.

It was so much fun to take well known Carols and make new clothes for them. For example, I heard a slow and sad melody of "Poor Little Jesus" one day. Yet, I wanted to make an energetic piece with an ostinato on the piano bass and improvisatory melodies on the violin. I also made the second part contrast more with the first part. The only mood I know of the song "Go Tell It On the Mountain" is steadily cheerful. But, I had pleasure making it into a mellow and gentle song. "Silent Night" is perhaps too famous and has only three chords originally. But, I stretched it to have more colorful harmonies and sensitive gestures. I happened to hear the somber single melody of the "Babe of Bethlehem". I imagined making it as a completely new piece with new chords, rhythms, and structure. The violin and cello are constantly using their open strings to ring the chords and happily dancing in 2/4 time. There were no chords on "Wexford Carol" that I know of from other arrangements. So, I decided to make very clear chords on each measure. I imagined windy and frozen winter scenes when I arranged the "Noel Nouvelet", and put in many more chords as well as freedom of the time. I had fun shifting meters for "The Carol of the Bells" and adding hemiola to the Spanish song "Sleep Baby". "Winter Memory", "Hope", and "Healing" display the perpetual motif (it appears at the beginning of the music) throughout the pieces. During this CD project, my beloved cat died during her cancer surgery. With my heart broken, I quickly wrote a song "Leaves Should Not Fall" (words by A. MacLean) in memory of her.

Pieces like Bright Morning Stars, Hope, Babe of Bethlehem, Winter Memory, Poor Little Jesus, Healing, Amazing Grace, Sleep Baby, Oh Watch the Stars, and Leaves Should Not Fall can be performed regardless the holiday.

Performers: Jason Anick, Violin, Christine Tsen, Cello, Ryan Lang, Alto Sax, Grace Choi, Piano and Voice
