Description

Original "class-grass" compositions fuse the classical and grassroots traditions, from Bach to Bluegrass, Copland to Celtic, Gershwin to Native American, Kodaly to Klezmer, and more.

Notes

GRAMINY's original "class-grass" compositions fuse the classical and grassroots traditions and focuses on themes of ecology and place. Our name derives from the botanical name for the grass family, Gramineae, as our music draws on the entire family of grassroots traditions, from all places and ecologies.

Based in Madison, WI, Graminy debuted on Earth Day 2010, with an enthusiastic performance of Mike Bell's original class-grass suite, "Gatherings" at the Overture Center in Madison. The talents and chemistry of the musicians led to more projects, including "Water, Grass, Place", a suite with choir based on the history and ecology of Sauk Prairie, WI, and "Loving of the Land", another class-grass piece for Graminy and choir.

"Germinations: A Bluegrass Symphony in D" was written over the course of 2012, with band-members contributing original pieces and arranging them through a process we've come to call "graminizing". The resulting "bluegrass symphony" honors the cycle of life of the plants and farms of the Midwest prairie.

Band Members: Shauncey Ali (fiddle, viola, mandola, octave fiddle); Michael Bell (mandolin, claw-hammer banjo); Mary Gaines (cello); Chris Powers (guitar, mandolin); Chris Wagoner (fiddle, mandolin, accordion)
