Notes
Michael Pinckney, the catalyst behind Miami-based Singular Fashion was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1975. His absorption of obscure and eclectic music began early in life.
In 1988, Michael moved to the suburbs of Chicago. Pinckney's love for the guitar and rock-n roll was very apparent, and the discovery of Chicago's diverse musical history would change his life forever. Chicago modified its hub status as the place to be in the 90s. The Alternative Music Scene would be the soundtrack to Pinckney's youth. In the mid to late 90's, Chicago's scene was at his disposal as rubbed shoulders with some of the artists and producers who influenced his hybrid-style of organics and electronics, reminiscent of Depeche Mode, Ministry, Portishead and many others.
It wasn't until he was introduced to David Baker (Mercury Rev, Shady) that he would start his voyage as a multi-instrumentalist/producer, after the two along with Seth Larson (Marvel Kind) joined forces on a pre-production studio, once owned by Disco mogul Peter Brown in 1997. The studio would be anchored in noted actress Mary Lou Henner's former home in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago. Pinckney began to experiment with the Linn Drum, Juno 6 (primary bass source), DX-7s, and primitive sequencers, infusing acoustic/analog treatments. In 2003 after a stint with project Anatomic, Michael began the transition into the moniker of Singular Fashion creating the palette for the project.
Singular Fashion’s debut album "Grey Area" is riddled with nihilistic, yet dreamy guitars, meandering around seamless "Wall of Sound" production, completing the hybrid with a "concrete jungle" aesthetic.
