Description

A truly unique concept bringing together an array of fashion cultures from across the globe through our love of music. A 'collection' of tracks inspired by the visual art of fashion. Brought to you by Secret d'Or: It's A Big World. Wear It.

Notes

Words from the créateur:

This album was created with and for Secret d'Or. This is a platform which represents rare, innovative and very desirable fashion and design collections from independent designers from across the globe. The arts are forever interconnected and it is this cultural diversity of fashion, art and music which has inspired our 'collection.'

I've always been fascinated by the painter George Seurat and his use of tiny dots of color to create a composite picture, allowing the eye to blend the colors and the mind to create the image for the viewer. I attempt to do the same thing by arranging tiny bits of sound to allow the ear to blend the noises and for the listener's mind to create a composite piece of music.

When I approached these pieces for my collaboration with Secret d'Or, I used the visual art of fashion as my reference and inspiration. Modern fashion incorporates elements from different countries and cultures while still maintaining the integrity of the original culture, therefore creating something entirely different and fresh as well as making the other side of the world accessible through clothing and art. So I began each track with that in mind, aspiring to the same connectivity and creativity. I began collecting sounds from all over the globe including Oriental strings, Middle-Eastern percussion, tribal sounds, American brass bands, etc. and fused them with modern stylings like hip-hop, French house, dubstep, cinematic...and of course, glitch...all in an attempt to mirror the cultural assimilation of modern fashion.

As I continued creating these tracks, I began assigning symbolism to the way I arranged layers. Layering is a technique used in both music and fashion, so it seemed so natural to explore that concept musically. The way a designer is able to create drama by a model stripping off a layer on the runway to reveal what is underneath...I found that could be true for the way a musician can strip away a layer to expose what musically was going on underneath.

I was also inspired by some of my favorite designers. The track "Drama" was very much inspired by Yohji Yamamoto's collections over the years. His incorporation of tradition and structure with a hip-hop influence (as seen in his Y-3 line) is such a beautiful and organic combination that I wanted to honor that in a song that combined similar elements.

My overall goal was to create a group of musical pieces as a "collection." I wanted them to stand alone as their own "look" but could also be understood as part of a whole. I wanted each piece to be classic but modern. Free-form yet structured. Layered at the same time as bare. Accessible yet pushing the envelope. I wanted a collection of contradictions that somehow worked when combined. And not only worked but created an emotional experience of art and beauty...much like I imagine Seurat's goal to be.

We hope you enjoy this album from the collaboration of Secret d'Or and Haus of Glitch.
