Description
Five original compositions and four new arrangements of classic Newfoundland folk songs from the Pacific Northwest's only group dedicated to performing the music of Newfoundland!
Notes
Based on the Celtic/maritime song and story traditions of its early immigrants, the music of Newfoundland evolved over time to become its own sound, neither quite Irish nor Canadian but distinctly somewhere in between. The songs tell their stories of life on the sea, of its challenges and rewards, of lives lost and victories won, all with a wink at death and a hearty taste for rum and good companionship. Piper Stock Hill was founded by St. John's-born American Ron Dickson, who rediscovered this wonderful trove of music on a return trip to Newfoundland in 2000. Upon realizing that no one in the Pacific Northwest was performing these songs on a regular basis, he formed the band with the express purpose of singing the praises of Newfoundland songs and exposing exposing audiences to popular artists such as Great Big Sea, Ryan's Fancy, The Punters, Fine Crowd and many others. The band consists of Ron Dickson on acoustic guitar and vocals; Tami Curtis on bodhran, whistle and vocals; Jan Strolle on fiddle, accordion and vocals; Alex Sturbaum on accordion, bouzouki and vocals; and David Correa on upright bass. They perform at Celtic venues and maritime festivals throughout the Pacific Northwest. This CD is their second release - the first, entitled "One Pub at a Time" was released in 2012 with a different personnel lineup and is currently out of print.
