Description

Progressive jazz-rock with fresh energy and sophistication; soak yourself in the melodies, harmonies, groove and musicianship, and lyrics that actually say something.

Notes

"Living Thing" is the debut album from New Zealand-born songwriter Russell Stedman, a.k.a. Rusted Man.

"The songs comes from many places", says Russell. "As a kiwi boy living in Malaysia for the past 15 years, I call two places and nowhere home. But whatever form it takes, home is mostly made up of people."

The lyrics explore themes of place and belonging, faith and doubt, and our limitless capacity to screw things up.

The music is influenced by Donald Fagen, Steely Dan, Seal, Sting, Al Jarreau, Toto, Neil Finn, Pat Metheny, Bill Evans.

"I'm constantly composing songs in my head, but it's only the ones which are still stuck there months later that end up being recorded. I figure if the melody never leaves me, it's meant to be heard" says Russell.

Musically, he is virtually unknown. "I think people are in for a surprise", he says. "I'm inspired by a quote from Bill Evans, describing his approach to breaking into the New York jazz scene. 'Ultimately, I came to the conclusion that all I must do is take care of the music, even if I do it in a closet. And if I really do that, somebody's going to come and open the door of the closet and say: "Hey we've been looking for you" '

Russell adds, "I've taken good care of the music - these songs will last."

Some of the most respected musicians in Asia-Pacific and beyond feature on the album, including famed artists Jamie Wilson and Sham Kamikaze on guitars, and Jens Bunge on harmonica.

Let "Living Thing" soak you in melody, harmony, groove and musicianship, and lyrics that actually say something.
