Description
Singer-songwriter whose melodic, psychedelic, rock 'n roll aesthetic combines a 1960s feel with the alternative '80s and the indie-rock of the '90s.
Notes
Cloverleaf, Fleeting With Strange, and Swinging Dancehall Girls are co-produced by Jake Mann.
Through the years and with the help of friends or just by himself, the songs of Volume One showcase Rich Ajlouny's journey through a musical timeline that took him to England on, among other things, a quest for the Grail. Glastonbury Tor revealed no such secrets as to the icon's whereabouts but did, on a night of a Summer Solstice, and with a parting of the clouds overhead, uncover one lonely constellation directly above the mystical isle of Avalon. With old friends and lovers, it is with much sadness that Rich remembers those Swinging Dancehall Girls - as if tragedy would come to those who actually waited.
And yes, somewhere Kafka laughs at how a "Hunger Artist"-inspired Cloverleaf finds the circus freaks underfed and worse for wear. So, please, please don't feed the animals! For it was the pending doom of an ill-fated Russian romance with her final words to him (in colloquial commie metaphor) that all is free for the taking, as Rich was Knocking On An Open Door; whilst the sadness of lost love that permeates Tom & His Midnight Garden is inherent and clear in the story of You've Been Mine - star crossed lovers, indeed, that put Romeo and Juliet to shame. But somewhere in Alice's Wonderland, the Lion and the Unicorn still fight Round The Town, as the contemplative ones find that the road of life is a lonely one that can dead end in a broken relationship that leaves you Nowhere To Run, Martha & the Vandellas be damned.
At that point, he thought, "There was nowhere to go So I Ran Home," where most likely a mother figure still waits with open arms. Fortunately for music lovers with broken hearts, the only lasting relationship is that between the bass and the drums, yea, the bass and the drums - for it's A Way Of Music, the only way for some. All of this after watching Regina Spektor banging away another awkward rhythm, leading this Chesire Puss to being so far from home in Earthboy To Spacecat, where girl cadets are cats dressed as cold, dead planets. And although being Too Cool for school is one of Rich Ajlouny's greater achievements, high marks notwithstanding, it would be best to ignore any juvenile tendencies.
Long ago in a dorm room far away the genesis for Hold Your Tongue germinated from the melodies of J Mascis, and certain fiends were awoken to the banging of his guitar. Betrayal, avarice, vice, and regret fill the metaphor driven Never Once No More, so let's leave it there downstairs where it belongs, in the dustbins of time. Anyways and regardless, there's always hope, for you know what the fella said about the Borgias! You might bump into an old friend and be sorely disappointed by his plentiful lack of wit and tip toe through the lazy gardens made so abundantly clear in Nights Of Stormy June.
With a little bit of spilled coffee, cigarette ash on your lap and more than a little luck, anything is possible. And the line of chimneys overtakes the sun and it all feels like a trip to Mars when your Fleeting With Strange. And just in case one forgets, remember the words of Hamlet, making a perfect epitaph for the writer of these songs -
"Be all my sins remembered!"
