Description

Soul-searching and passionate indie-rock music written from within valleys of the forlorn.

Notes

The heart beat of this album came from the song "We Will Rise," lyrics written just in the aftermath of the Aurora, Colorado Batman: Dark Knight Rises premier movie shooting. Each song, from Freedom's Road (the first track) to Still (the last track) is about finding oneself in a valley with seemingly no way out, but finding hope beyond the pains. Basically, the point is to use each song, each lyric, to meet people in their valleys and instill the hope that it doesn't end there.

After a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the EP, this album makes good on its promise. A recent interview by Austin-based Anchor Music News recently wrote about it:

"Renevus (meaning “rebirthed” or “remarked) has a big vision, “to change lives.” One could easily notice that they have already been successful in that vision many times; especially given the evidence of the people they have reached through online social mediums. Even more proof could be found in their recent Kickstarter that raised over $5,000 with only 63 backers."

The Album Order:
1. Freedom's Road
2. War Song
3. Spirit Awake
4. Break
5. Death Has Lost Its Sting
6. We Will Rise
7. Still

The songs themselves contain a vastness due to their variety.

Freedom's Road is an edgy song with elements of folk and southern metal mixed in. It's a song about identity and how easily who we are can be muddled with our choices (the good or the bad).

War Song paints an allegory of a dragon at the beginning of the song. There is no escape and no hope from this dragon. Its claws sink deeply into us and its fiery breath burns flesh. The dragon represents addiction or bondage to the lies we believe. "I'm screaming out this war song" is about waging battle against the lies no matter what the cost - about choosing honor over disgrace and recognizing that there is freedom through Jesus Christ.

Spirit Awake is a prayer that asks God to "burn my idols and the things that take Your place; Capture my heart, oh my Spirit awake." It's a probing and self-invading prayer that challenges the core of who we are and doesn't leave room for compromise. At the end, the song explodes with the cry, "Oh my Spirit awake!"

Break is a song that Renevus fans may be very familiar with. It was first seen on their starting demo EP, "Rejuvenation." It's a fast-moving song with a catchy chorus and drum break downs to boot. It is about tearing down the walls of our lives and being broken so that we can be rebuilt.

Death Has Lost Its Sting. The most eclectic feeling track of the EP. This track began as an experiment with just one line and turned into several stanzas of lyrics. The words are written more like a poem than a song, and the ambient-electronic sound only adds to the feeling. The sound of dangling and dropping chains were recorded to help stimulate the thought of walking forward in life, bound and shackled.

We Will Rise. The title track. It was written out of tragedy and has been used to change lives and impact others. The single released in July of 2013 and half of the song's sales go to an amazing organization called "Feed My Starving Children." It was inspired by Jessica Ghawi, an old high school friend of Gideon Roberts, singer of Renevus. After learning what had happened to her and the other other victims of the shooting (mentioned above), he was left agonizing over why God would let such a thing happen. Through much wrestling and writing in his journal, he wrote the lyrics to We Will Rise. He felt God begin to instill in him a new-found depth of the hope he had in Christ, that despite death and suffering being so very real, that there is a hope that cannot be stolen. It will never fade. The bridge of the song encapsulates this sentiment best:

"We will rise to new life, All our tears wiped from our eyes, We will sing a brand new song, The glories of God always on our tongue, We will shout in victory, That God has won, swallowed death's sting, We will come to our King, Love always remains, Our hope complete."

Finally, "Still" is the last track of the album. It is a continuation from We Will Rise and is pure, unadulterated worship. It's based in Psalm 46:10 that says,

“Be still, and know that I am God!
I will be honored by every nation.
I will be honored throughout the world.”

Complete with gang and guest vocals, the EP erupts with praise as it comes to a close.
