Nexus: Connecting the dots from Rock to Hip Hop
Notes
"neXus" has been a band in the making since 1996. Ironically, the first combination of musicians was Brian "Tricky Myx" Amyx (drums), Ryan Finney (guitar), and Chris Paxton (bass guitar). Jason Gunderman also started as bassist in a combo with Brian on drums/Ryan on guitar (Solar Flow). Jason later switched roles with Ryan (who was playing bass in the school jazz band) as lead guitarist. While this was going on Chris was drumming in "BlackList", and later joined a progressive band "Razing Beauty". In high school, Amyx moved from percussion to vocals with new co-vocalist/dj Matt Jon Aguilar. When this happened Chris was willing to change styles and joined as drummer. In 2000 "neXus" was official and the original 5 were set: Tricky Myx (vocals), Matt Jon (vocals/dj), Chris (drums), Ryan (bass), Jason "Spy" Gunderman (guitar). Amyx began playing rhythm guitar along with vocals. The group played in and out of garages and storage units until settling at a studio in Oakland. With a great rehearsal space the hours of work started pouring in. neXus won second place in the Upward Rising music and films festival in 2003. On May 28th, 2004, neXus packed Rooster's Roadhouse with screaming fans and undoubtedly put on one of its best show. The performance included the first guest appearance by Son of Ran. Weeks later, Jason was hit by a car on his motorcycle, breaking his thumb (L), wrist(R), and injuring his shoulder(R). The accident cost lots of time and patience. Matt Jon left the group and geared his focus towards school and work. Jason began playing again, but was still in pain and needed more time off. Chris took charge running the recording studio as the main engineer at "Nexus Audio" (myspace.com/nexusaudio). Nexus began auditioning a variety of singers and musicians. Slowly but surely the remaining band members began working on a project with a keyboardist named Jallah who had moved to California from Michingan/Chicago. Jallah, Tricky, Ryan, and Chris began touring with a group called Hardnox while Jason rehabilitated his injuries, and after about a year, neXus began working on a compilation album featuring a variety of vocalists over neXus instrumentals (The Connection). The album features cameos such as rappers Turf Talk, Mr. Fab, and Shock G/Humpty, as well as Jamaican reggae singer Bobby Tenna. neXus had it's first radio single (Joy) debut in Jamaica on Irie FM. neXus is now currently promoting The Connection, as well as writing their own album (no guest vocalists) and touring live. Be on the lookout for new neXus tracks, music videos, and of course come to the live shows
The Connection is an album that incorporates many styles. It has something to offer for everyone.
