Notes
Jeff Feinberg lost his daughter, Savannah Cheyanne Feinberg at age 15 in 2005. Having trained since the age of 3 in gymnastics, she became the Nevada Union High Schools best flyer on the Cheerleader team. Since her passing, Jeff has set up a scholarship fund in his daughter's name: 'The Savannah Cheyanne Feinberg Scholarship Fund.' This fund assists cheerleaders at the school with financial aid. He also established an achievement award to recognize one cheerleader each year who embodies the spirit of Savannah. When placing the Achievement Award into the school's existing trophy case, he noticed the worn condition of the case and decided at that time to build a new trophy case and dedicate it in his daughter's name. We follow his journey during the building of that trophy case, learning more about Savannah along the way and what an amazing talent and person she was.
The Savannah Project was an intensely moving and emotional film on which to craft the score. The first task was honing in on “Savannah’s Theme.” I knew I did not want to go the minor chord, deeply sad route with the music. Yes, the story is tragic, but it is also heartwarming and conveys a young girl’s memory and spirit moving on and going forward. To that end, the main theme focuses on a major chord suspension - the theme doesn’t resolve or come to an end. Rather, it is suspended and, like Savannah’s spirit, continues onward.
Sampled piano and cello with sampled accompaniment strings form the basis of her theme, and once I had that nailed down, the rest of the music flowed quite easily. My goal was to have both tender, gentle cues as well as uplifting, vibrant cues to help support the scenes and emotions presented throughout the movie.
The film was masterfully assembled and edited, and that made the composition such a dream against which to write the score. It was my intent to support and elevate what was inherently captured and presented in the film with music that touches the heart and also elevates the spirit.
