Description

Medieval music made modern. "Modieval" is a project to bring the tunes of the middle ages into the modern era, and to use the sounds of medieval instruments and combine them with modern sampling and sequencing technology.

Notes

"Modieval" is a mission to bring the tunes of the middle ages into the modern era and make them more acceptable to 21st century ears - to use the sounds of medieval instruments and combine them with modern sampling and sequencing technology.

The album features pieces based on the following medieval tunes:

Au Renouviau - (French C13th - anon.)
Hoboekentanz - (Tielman Susato)
Virelai - (French C13th - anon.)
Allemande - (Tielman Susato)
Douce Dame Jolie - (C14th Guillaune de Machaut)
Madre de Deus - (C13th - anon.)
Les Bouffons - (French - anon.)
Quarter Brawl - (Tielman Susato)
Pastre Placas Vostre Troupeu (Shepherds Calm Your Flock) - (C16th - anon.)
Branle de Chevaux (Horses Brawl) - (C15th)
Pastourelle - (French C13th - anon.)
Ronde - (Tielman Susato)
Under der Linden (Austrian C13th)

Album length 43 mins.

Tracks feature excerpts from recorded music by the members of Modieval mixed with modern drum loops, bass-lines, keyboards and percussion.

Medieval instruments featured on this recording:

Medieval English Bagpipe, Bombarde, Double Hornpipe, Reedpipe, Nakers, Rebec, Alto and Tenor Crumhorns, Cittern, Dulcimer, String Drum, Soprano Alto Tenor and Bass Gemhorns, Whistle Flute, Gittern, Cup Bells, Medieval Recorders, Hurdy Gurdy, Shawms, Gong, Tabor, Long Drum, Rommelpot, Flute, Finger Bells, Medieval Xylophone, Renaissance Fiddle, Bumbas, Goblet Drum, Lyre.

All samples played initially by Lee Gillett, David Marshall, Valerie Marshall and John Mallet (who comprise Modieval). This album is dedicated to my great friend David Marshall (1939 - 2002) and would not have been possible without his genius and vision.
