Description

The debut EP of psychedelic pop duo M!nds At Large is an eclectic collection of moombahton rhythms, psychedelic synth work, and harmonious vocals. Their well-crafted songs, upbeat melodies and masterful production are sure to pull in fans of all genres.

Notes

Transplanted from the Silicon Valley and rooted in a Chicago basement, M!nds at Large’s Jimmy Chandler and Josh Waldman began experimenting with electronic music production in 2010 after the two met through a fellow friend and musician. After Chandler moved to Chicago to attend a private arts college, he convinced Waldman that the Chi-town lifestyle held more promise for musicians like themselves. From the basement where Chandler lives, the two friends collaborate on electronic music and hone their craft of home production.

Minds at Large’s first EP “LIFEBΟΔΤ” reveals a band with an appreciation for the psychedelic as well as the melodic. The lead synth melody in “Chasing Rabbits,” though present for the duration of the song, imperceptibly coalesces into and dissolves from the foreground of the music, creating an ethereal bridge that moves the piece from verse to verse. “I Always Hurt the One I Love” exemplifies the band’s talent for sculpting fixating and lasting choruses, as Chandler croons over a torrent of reflective and nostalgic synths, “If I don’t see you before I go/ You should know/ I always hurt the ones I love.” However, it is the band’s deft ability for home production that powers their music, as the two mix and master every track from their computer with an ear that leaves very little left to be desired. Each track expounds the duo’s dedication to detailed and cohesive atmospheres, their taste for originality yet familiarity, and their love for music that can be blasted in the car.
