Description

Soundtrack music written in 1999 for a dance theatre interpretation of the King Arthur legend. In styles from baroque to jazz, these diverse tracks were performed with live dance from the Spiral Arts Dance Theatre group in a dozen UK performances.

Notes

This album represents an attempt to interpret the King Arthur legend in dance. In 1999 I was approached by the director of the Spiral Arts dance theatre group, Bryony Williams, to write music for this project. There was very little script and I wrote many of the tracks from very loose ideas. The result is this very diverse bunch of pieces which range from deliberate baroque stylings through folk, rock and jazz with some electro-pop minimalism thrown in. I really enjoyed writing and producing these pieces and they somehow hold together as a coherent group of compositions. There were a dozen live performances to this soundtrack and they were well received. The resulting soundtrack has taken until now to see the light of day and I felt the material was strong enough to release as a standalone album of music to listen to.
The rest is up to you - check these tracks out and see what you think!

Short biography of the composer:
Paul is a composer/arranger, multi-instrumentalist and teacher. He writes from his Kent-based home recording studio and has composed and produced many albums there including the playalongs for harmonica with Ben Helwett. He has produced books on Music Training Basics, Practising and Ear-Training as well as collections of pieces for piano, violin, guitar and flute. From 1993 Paul taught at the City Literary Institute in London and wrote a three-year jazz harmony and ear-training course.
As a music editor and copyist he has worked for many years with Dave Hewson on his projects for KPM/EMI with at least eight albums to Paul’s credit. 2002 also saw the recording of a harmonica sample album with Ben Hewlett for ZERO-G, a major sample company.
Currently Paul is very involved in composition and recording particularly with Ben Hewlett on the ongoing Harmonica Course and also his own playalong projects for guitar and piano. Apart from this he continues to teach piano, guitar, violin, bass and singing privately along with theory, harmony and composition. On the performing side he continues to play piano in a duo with Howard Turner (formerly with Itchy Fingers) playing jazz standards and originals.
Paul’s latest venture is studying trumpet to the highest level possible with the aim to perform in both classical and jazz idioms. This instrumental practice has already stimulated composition with studies in all keys, duets and pieces for trumpet and piano. His riff book for guitar can be found on HarmonicaWorld.net and the albums Noodles & Blues Moods and Noodles & Piano Moods are both available on CDbaby.
