Description
Powerful, lyrical, meditative songs from a talented singer songwriter backed by some of Boston's finest rock musicians.
Notes
This is rock music that draws from the organic, not too precious playing of the 70s, but is equally indulgent in the moodiness of Seattle. My influences are mainly Chris Whitley, Chris Cornell, and a long way back in my heart Smashing Pumpkins, Dire Straits, The Smiths Louder than Bombs, the music of Jeff Buckley, the guitar sweat of Swervedriver, but also Grant Lee Buffalo and Neil Young.
It's melodramatic and at points, very meditative and chill. I love guitars, so there are 12 strings, baritones, lots of electrics, and in many different tunings. I love detuning - something I got from Sonic Youth and Chris Whitley and Soundgarden.
Lyrically, the songs on this cd are about the idea of making meaning in a world and life that can feel accidental and too ephemeral. The CD is called Sand Painting after the ceremony of the same name, and the 12th track The Folly is about building something beautiful for the sake of building it.
In many ways that's the artistic process here.
