Notes
Review by Evan Chavez:
On Self Aware, multi-instrumentalist Mathew Allen Vargo (MAV), seems to have found his ‘voice.’ After the exploration of more ‘extreme’ heavy metal that was his first album, The FitzWater Ghost, he’s moved in a more mellow overall, yet still highly melodic and often hard rocking direction, on his sophomore album. The common currency of this music is the progressive metal genre, specifically bands such as Porcupine Tree and Opeth, but it doesn’t limit itself to that. There starts the album off in an effectively propulsive manner, showing off his use of use dynamics, space, and time changes. Highlights here are numerous. Tracks like Stop Dreaming and Four Years would fit in nicely on modern rock radio. Listen to the insistent chorus of Stop Dreaming and good luck getting it out of your head for the rest of the day. Probably most exciting though, is the centerpiece of the album, the nearly 9 minute suite of Season’s End Pt. 1 & 2. It starts off with some light acoustic strumming but by the end, well, I don’t want to spoil it for you, let’s just say it sounds like the end of the world. Other highlights include some particularly gritty guest vocals by Stephan Daniel Weldon on The Only Purpose and Houses on Ashes and strings by Jonathan Neal on Four Years. Self Aware takes the listener on a musical journey that explores themes such as love, loss, redemption, and hope, but perhaps just as important-- there are real, catchy songs here, and much of the time, these songs really ROCK.
