Description
The sound of Kurt Cobain and Johnny Cash beating the shit out of each other.... Mat Jones is blood and guts rock and roll.
Notes
Mat Jones is hard to nail down. His music has been described as Insurgent Country, Southern Rock, Texas Grunge, Roots Rock, Punktry, etc. Labels for the sake of labeling.
Born in a small town in the Texas Hill Country, his early childhood was characterized by a steady diet of country music, Elvis Presley and a “typically Catholic fear of God.” Those were the few constants in a family that moved frequently from city to city around Texas. Jones’ first guitar, “a $100 Les Paul knock off that fed back like hell,” quickly became the focal point of a pretty standard adolescent rebellion devoted to early punk, metal, grunge… anything really loud.
His seemingly disparate influences evolved into something that has been described as “the sound of Johnny Cash and Kurt Cobain in a drunken bar fight." After relocating, from Dallas to Los Angeles, Jones’ honed his skills working acoustically in bars and clubs. Not your typical acoustic artist Jones earned a reputation and following for his loud and violent approach to the stage. As a lyricist and a songwriter, Jones has been sought by other artists to write songs for various television shows.
In 2005 Jones' began work on "August," a collection of tunes capturing the sound he's become known for. "August" marks a departure from the conventional alt-country sound. Produced by Brian Irwin, “August” is, at once, a heartfelt and heavy, distinctively southern Rock n Roll album.
Mat Jones is currently in the studio completing a follow up album, tentatively titled “The Jonestown Revival,” scheduled for release in August of 2007. “The Jonestown Revival” will be a further exploration of southern music. Heavier, darker, and more sonically expansive, it promises to pick up where “August” left off.
