Mellowkotzen, a group of passionate and widely different musical individuals on the 1st of November 2014, released their 2nd album entitled 'Under Water Melon'. Taking inspiration from the early days of Motown, Stax and the incomparable jazz of the 40’s and 50’s, Mellowkotzen’s 'UnderWaterMelon' is a unique collage of moods and textures. Featuring the lyrics and vocal stylings of Jessie Houston, the new CD weaves a tapestry of complex emotions and issues with elegant simplicity.
Recorded in live sessions at Chalet Studios, Claremont Ontario, this latest offering showcases the fully realized vision of songs which have been honed through hundreds of live performances. The months of work on the album tapped into the perfectionist streak in the band who even reached out to arranger-to-the-stars Miguel Atwood-Ferguson for some consultation.
Well respected in their local music scene, Mellowkotzen took home the 2013 artist of the year award from Oshawa’s Broken Arts Collective. Members of the band have been busy doing session work for several local acts: Professors of Funk, Stereo Moon, Hairy Holler, Heather Luckhart, Fish Head Phil, and Rhyme Jaws are just a few of the acts who have utilized the multitude of talents the band has to offer. Bassist and Audio Engineer Jon Sloan and Multi-Instrumentalist and arranger Bruce Mackinnon have many other projects, including Film and Video Game scores, lined up through their new venture Pleather Pike Productions.
Mellowkotzen recently finished their 2014 summer tour playing venues from Lindsay to Montreal that strengthened the band’s bond, fueled their desire to play live and helped to fine tune their sound. From Oshawa's Canada Day Celebrations and Solstice Festival, to sets at the Horseshoe Tavern, Moustache Club, and the Rivoli, Mellowkotzen delivers a wide array of music for an even wider variety of tastes.
