Description

Formed in 2010, Serial Hawk is a crushingly heavy three piece from Seattle, Washington. They bring a massive wall of sound that will bring you to your knees. Punishing riffs with destructive tone, a band that truly needs to be experienced live.

Notes

"Seattle sludge/doom trio Serial Hawk are set to release their debut full-length Searching For Light in a couple months, and as you can hear on the nine-minute track “Desolate’, it’s the sort of relentless yet hypnotic form of heavy music in the great tradition of Neurosis. Power and contemplation melded into one colossal whole, a track that swings as much as it stomps."

—ADRIEN BEGRAND, (Pop Matters)

"One of the bands that really stood out at this year's Ceremony of Sludge in Portland, Oregon was Seattle crew SERIAL HAWK. The band was simply unrelenting and kept the crowd spellbound. See Serial Hawk and you will really experience something. Their new album 'Searching For Light' (2015) promises to be one of those "sneaker waves" that you're not expecting to grab you, but when it does, you feel it deeply. First two tracks are streaming and the full release is expected September 18th."

—BILLY GOAT, (Doomed & Stoned Blog)

"Seattle trio Serial Hawk has spent the past five years honing their scathing, dynamic blend of patient doom metal and jarring noise rock on a handful of short-form releases and long tours. This nationwide jaunt precedes a new LP, Searching for Light, due in September."

—BRYAN C. REED, (INDY Week)

"Adding their colossal weight to the bill will be heavier than thou riff-slayers Serial Hawk, whose monolithic sound rivals those who set the standard for sludgy, doomy, stoner metal. Expect to be pummeled by huge riffs and drown in a sea of hot distortion."

—BRIAN KIM, (The Seattle Passive Aggressive Zine)

"Serial Hawk are returning home from a 4 week tour that took the trio as far as Buffalo, NY recently. Well received on the road, the band will release their new 7-inch for the track “Lying In Wait” from their upcoming full-length Searching For Light. More vocally focused then past Serial Hawk releases, “Lying in Wait” is still pure Serial Hawk, sludgy and loud, dominated by the riff. The 7-inch b-side is a 4 minute preview of the title track of the new record. These are hand numbered in a limited release of 250."

—JAMES BALLINGER, (The Seattle Passive Aggressive Zine)

"Serial Hawk will knock you on your ass, but they don’t strike quickly. Their crushing blows are slow and purposeful, like the booby trap in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, where Indiana and Short Round are nearly bludgeoned with those giant, skull-covered spikes (that is, until Willie reaches into that disgusting bug hole to pull the release lever—gross). The riffs are heavy, the tempo is magmatic, and each beat lingers in the air for just a tiny moment longer than expected, taunting you. It’ll be a perfect follow-up to Monogamy Party’s wiry, hyperactive thrashing. And in case you missed the great news, the Highline has brought back its food service, so get to the show early, fill your belly with all the vegan grub you can eat, and headbang till you puke!"

—MEGAN SELING, (The Stranger, Line Out)

"How many goddamn heavy, metallic bands do you need in your life? What is the optimal number for a human in the 21st century? These important questions nag at one, even during a heatwave. Whatever the answer is, you should include Seattle trio Serial Hawk among the heavy, metallic bands you allow into your headspace. Their slow, domineering style draws on the lessons of exemplars like Melvins and Earth, with the bonus of a vocalist, Will Bassin, who goes from a whisper to a scream with finesse. Serial Hawk’s command of dynamics and tendency to let their hypnotizing riffs extend and decay lend their sound a glowering psychedelic frisson. Dig the tarry deepness."

—DAVE SEGAL, (The Stranger, Line Out)

"There is something about a three piece band that I’ve always loved. Maybe it’s the fact that everyone is pulling equal weight, every member usually has something going on at all times. Serial Hawk is one of the latest bands to really catch my attention. The band sounds so massive live; you can’t help but watch closely. The trio brings the big, slow, molasses-style riffs, with an intensity that is as infectious as it is brooding. The band was formed as a two piece in Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood in the basement practice space of the band By Sunlight, by guitarist/vocalist Will Bassin. Since then, they have been playing shows since 2010, in several venues all over Seattle and the West Coast. Bassist Adam Holbrook was added after the bands second show, giving the band the burly low end it needed. After putting out a well received 7 song demo in May of 2011, Serial Hawk added Drummer Justin Rodda to the line-up. The band shortly after started working on their debut EP “Buried in the Gray”. Engineered and mixed by Adam Pike at Toadhouse Studios and mastered by Levi Seitz at Black Belt Mastering, the album is full of thick sounding guitar and bass tones, and sounds as big as bands with twice the members. It’s warm, maintaining the abrasive sound the band has become known for performing live, while the tracks are more structured and absolute. Additional vocals have been added from the tracks formed from the demo recordings, adding another dynamic to the band without distracting from any of the other finer points. The EP will be released on 12” Vinyl available at serialhawk.com via Made in China, as well as at live shows, and will also include a digital download card for your pieces of technology."

—JAMES BALLINGER, (The Seattle Passive Aggressive Zine)

"For the last several years, I have maintained that if given the power to have the intro from any song play whenever I walked into a room, that song would be "Blanket" by Unbroken. It's such a gigantic, crushing intro. Totally amazing. Serial Hawk's brutal stoner rock causes me to second-guess that choice, though. Every Serial Hawk song comes with riffs and beats that are so massive and unyielding that it is clear there is no room for bullshit here. Think old TAD and the heaviest of heavy Melvins songs. Serial Hawk blast the room with relentless energy that demands attention but also instills a little bit of fear. And most importantly, they don't put up with any crap."

—MEGAN SELING, (The Stranger, Line Out)

"Listening to Seattle’s stoner/sludge trio Serial Hawk, the word that comes to mind is “saturation.” Or to steal from an old Palmolive commercial, “you’re soaking in it.” The trio manage to invert their energy into every song. Their most recent EP, “Buried In the Gray” sums up in title and sonic presence the down-tuned wall of oppressive ambiance the band manifests through each performance."

—RUSTYN ROSE, (Metalholic.com)

"Serial Hawk, Buried in the Gray (out now, self-released, serialhawk.com): Slow and heavy chromatic riffs blend the stoner rock of Kyuss with the Northwest sludge of bands like Tad and the Melvins. The EP's closer, "Watch It Burn," is so sludgy and slowed-down it may be unheadbangable."

—Dave Lake, (SeattleWeekly.com)

"Good god Serial Hawk. The absolute loudest most crushing band in town besides Brothers of the Sonic Cloth. I have to give Tad upper hand but I'm hatching a scheme to get these two bands side-by-side to settle the debate. Serial Hawk have changed bits and pieces of their set each time I've seen them, constantly refining and evolving but thing that doesn't change is their aim to pulverize eardrums. If you love heavier than thou stoner metal played at crushing volumes, Will, Paul, and Adam have your back."

"We have a new impressively heavy band amongst us going by the name, Serial Hawk. This Seattle band formed back in 2010 and delivers elephantine sized instrumental stoner metal complete with massive brooding riffs that are pretty much the definition of heavy as I hear it."

—NIK CHRISTOFFERSON, (Seattle Rock Guy, Good to Die Records)
