Description
A poetic and mystical mixture of Occidental neo-classical, medieval and Oriental influences. New age meets dark wave and avant-garde pop, jazzy ambient meets progressive world music, Orient meets Occident. Different cultures are like embracing each other.
Notes
The concept album 'Sulamith & Maria' is about the international situation of this incipient 21st century, it is an answer to the increasing polarization between Occident and Orient, which is driven forward by fanatics on both sides. Since two members of the ensemble of those recordings spent their childhood and youth in the Orient, it is also a journey into the personal past - the theme of inner strife, living in between two societies. The central request has been to unite these two cultural complexes in their ideational roots within this cycle - a dialog of ideas, proceeding from the texts of Jalal ad-Din Rumi and Hildegard von Bingen. Around this central spiritual love poetry written by those European and Asian mystics who admonished for tolerance, some own lyrical sketches are ranking, concerning with the fusion of those different and although relative cultures. The cycle has been completed by poems of the European Romanticism, because this artistic movement has examined at the art of the Orient for the first time in later European history with a great sense of equal rights and without any illusion of self-superiority and has been influenced by this. The idea of the union of the cultural areas is also reflected by the choice of old and new European and Asian languages, sung and spoken by very different voices. The cycle 'Sulamith & Maria' means a signal, and so we follow the words of the romantic artist Friedrich Overbeck, who has painted the programmatic identically titled picture: "It is my task to merge those two elements which are facing each other. On the one hand is the memory of the native country and on the other hand the attraction of the marvelous and beautiful which I enjoy in the presence. This means the longing which the north drags on to the south constantly - its art, its nature, its poetry."
