Description

The Minister of Chance sonic movie has turned me into a Waltz Wizard! These are five contemporary classical piano pieces, each inspired by a character in The Minister of Chance.

Notes

This time around, I'm trying my hand at capturing, in 3/4 time, five characters from a Doctor Who spinoff sonic movie called "The Minister of Chance." "The Minister of Chance" was written, directed and produced by Dan Freeman. Clare Eden is the executive producer. It stars Jenny Agutter (Professor Cantha), Lauren Crace (Kitty), Paul Darrow, Tamsin Greig, Peter Guinness, Sylvester McCoy (The Witch Prime), Paul McGann (Durian) and Julian Wadham (The Minister.) The sonic movie is available as a free download from iTunes or from the movie's website: http://www.ministerofchance.com/
The Minister of Chance is a Time Lord, like Doctor Who. The Minister comes to the island nation of Tanto on an alien planet, to investigate why some of the nearby stars have been moved and some have changed color. Thus the adventure begins.
There are 5 tracks on "Once Upon A Time In Tanto," and they are my interpretations of the characters of The Minister, The Witch Prime, Durian, Professor Cantha, and Kitty. This has been a fun project for me, inspired by a wonderful creation from the mind of the brilliantly inventive and funny Dan Freeman, who was kind enough to encourage me to try writing some waltzes for some of the characters.
Dan and executive producer Clare have been working overtime to raise the funds to cover the costs of shooting a mini-film of the Prologue. The shoot was in October, 2013, and they are now in post-production. Everything to date has been funded by the fans who love it, and I will be donating all proceeds of this recording through December 31, 2013 to the project. Within the next few weeks, Dan and Clare will begin seeking investors to turn this award-winning project into a full-length feature film or perhaps a TV mini-series.
I have written these tunes as a fan of the series, because characters as unforgettable as these deserve to have music written for them.
Track descriptions:
"The Minister of Chance" is a Time Lord-- a powerful, mysterious and sometimes downright scary being. One cannot tell what is within his heart, always, but he is basically kind. He is largely alone in the universe. This piece is meant to show the Minister's haunting, unsettling, solitary qualities.
"The Witch Prime" is the leader of all the witch covens in the nation of Sezuan. He is equal parts evil and cowardice. He is thoroughly sinister and bad news from every angle.
"Durian's Deceit:" Durian is the ambitious ambassador from Sezuan who takes over the island nation of Tanto single-handedly. He breezes into the place, oozing charm and speaking in a friendly tone of voice, using his physical attractiveness and initial friendly banter to keep his host from killing him. But eventually his sweet voice begins to deliver revoltingly diabolical threats...
"Professor Cantha's Dream:" Professor Cantha is a scientist and a pacifist. She wants those who believe in magic to open their eyes and find a scientific cause for every effect. She absolutely refuses to participate in or support war. She dreams of a beautiful world in which magic spells have been replaced by the scientific method, and peace has been achieved through non-violence.
"Kitty's Theme:" Kitty is The Minister's companion on his quest to safeguard Tanto from the danger threatening its existence. Kitty is a teen-aged force of nature: unnaturally strong, physically; strong-willed; and outspoken. Although the Minister discounts her abilities, more than once she figures things out before he does, and without her help, the Minister's quest might well have turned out differently. She is glorious. This piece, although in 3/4 time, is not a waltz. It is a Mazurka, because I think Kitty is just not a smooth waltzy type. She's too forceful for that.
