“The Reflections Project” evolved rather organically from the title track “Reflections”, co-written by artist Steven Alan Burgess and his wife, Lauren. This deeply personal song seduces the listener with whimsical lyrics and haunting, yet uplifting melodies and a new jazz vibe. It contrasts loss with the return to joy, invokes moments to reflect and invites one to let go.This unexpected journey into jazz is a dramatic departure for Burgess , a lifetime rocker and country-rock recording artist. The journey began on Maui’s beautiful Hamoa Beach with a guitar and some lyrics. The resulting composition became the catalyst to explore more of Maui’s jazz scene, a scene with remarkably talented and dedicated musicians. The opportunity to showcase that talent became abundantly clear and “The Reflections Project” was born.
This collection celebrates the brilliant work of 9 of Maui’s finest jazz artists. Without hesitation, they brought award winning style and diversity to the Burgess’s uncharted waters...Gina Martinelli, Rock Hendricks, Kelly Covington, Tom Conway, Sal Godinez, Joel Katz, Phil & Angela Benoit, Gene Argel all deliver with a personal touch both of themselves, and of the islands. The pure aloha they bring to this compilation exudes itself in every note and we are eternally grateful to our “Reflections Ohana”. Each of them are an integral part and proved an infinite wellspring of loving support and creative energy; without them this compilation wouldn’t exist.
