Description
A collection of songs written by local music students and musicians to raise money for Syrian refugee relief. This has been a collaborative effort between students, teachers and friends to come together and produce some great and varied music.
Notes
As a guitar, bass and keyboard tutor, I have the privilege of spotting and helping to develop young talented musicians and this year we decided to try and create something for a good cause. The civil war in Syria has been dragging on for almost three years at the time of writing, with no end in sight, and the focus appears to be more and more on the ever-complicating politics. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of families - no different to you or I - have had their loves and homes destroyed, lost everything they've worked hard for, and are forced out of their homeland to try and find safety.
So we decided to try and do something to help. I set my students the task of writing a Christmas song which I then helped them to arrange (or not, in some cases - some of them didn't need my help at all!) and record, with assistance from my good friends local drum teacher Steve Ward, singer, lyricist and mastering engineer extraordinaire Matt Chubb and the brilliant Leah Govier, head of Castle Rock High School music department and a great singer herself.
The songs on here are all collaborative efforts between young music students and the more experienced teachers, and I can hand on heart say that while it's been a lot of work to get to this point, it's also been hugely enjoyable and I'm extremely proud of and grateful to everyone who's contributed to this album. Unfortunately there are some students whose tracks which didn't make the cut due to time constraints, and to you let me say I'm equally proud and we'll see those tracks on next year's album! All in all, it's been a great ride doing this and I think we've all learned a great deal - I know I certainly have!
