Description
Invigorating synth-pop from Brooklyn that calls to mind the fun of summer and the excitement of finding out your crush likes you too
Notes
Brooklyn-based band LE BOUM (French for “the shindig” or “the explosion”) has announced
the release of their first EP, titled “Say Hello.” The five-song, self-released, album showcases
the skillful songwriting of Julian McCarron and an invigorating synth-pop sound that calls to
mind the fun of summer and the excitement of finding out that your crush likes you, too.
The four-piece female-fronted band came together in 2010 when guitarist/vocalist J
McCarron decided it was time to take the reins. “After being a supporting musician for 10
years, playing in pop bands, touring America, playing festivals, recording, writing songs,
lending artistic vision, and watching it all slip through the cracks pre-release and having to
start over, LE BOUM was formed to stop this vicious cycle and for me to put forth my own
voice, artistic vision, music, and front-man-ship.” A search on Craigslist somehow led her away
from sketchiness and toward synth player Jenessa Kornaker and guitarist Mike Manetta. Later,
drummer Don Lavis joined the indie-rock outfit, the stars aligned, and LE BOUM was formed.
Their only goal: “To record good music that people want to hear and makes them feel good.”
And with “Say Hello” their mission has been accomplished. Think Stephen Malkmus and Liz
Phair co-owning a candy store. LE BOUM’S music is what would fill your ears during the
imminent sugar high.
Tracks like “Paper Planes” and “Do the Right Thing” are reminiscent of Metric, Superchunk,
and Pavement. The cohesive, confident sound belies the band’s two years together while also
speaking to their combined 30 years of experience. McCarron’s favorite track, “Directions,” was
inspired by “friends, lovers, those in-between,” she says. “It’s about not knowing how to walk
away from desire and needing to ask anybody that’ll listen for directions to get back to yourself.”
But don’t be frightened—these directions come from a trusted friend who knows how to make
you smile.
