Description

New classical combined with New Age and ambient; mesmerizing moods, soaring melodies and cinematic, lush orchestrations.

Notes

The debut album from this Finnish composer takes you on a deeply emotional, cinematic musical voyage. Using a wide variety of styles - New Age, ambient, New Classical, even Latin percussion and rhythms - that effortlessly blend as a whole, Katja Hellman has something special to offer to any avid New Age listener - and beyond.

Trained as a classical pianist since the age of five, Katja incorporates her piano in many tracks on this album, but along the way she also uses the instrumentation of an entire symphony orchestra, plus percussive elements, samples and synthesizers. All this is finely crafted together in a musically expressive way.

The album’s underlying concept is the journey of a pilgrim, hence the album title “Pilgrimage”.

Katja’s thoughts on the album:
“I believe we are all on a pilgrimage of our own - we walk through our dark valleys and climb our personal mountains... witness magnificent views, see visions and have epiphanies, enjoy moments in solitude and suffer in many ways needlessly but seemingly endlessly. We get out feet in the mud, hold our chin up regardless, get through difficulties with the help of our persaverence, faith, stubbornness or just plain luck, and continue to aim higher and further... and, hopefully, advance slowly but surely towards our personal destination, whatever it may be for each one of us.”

The concept for the album built slowly as the compositional work advanced.

“I found myself working on this collection of pieces that had been coming to me over the course of several years. On the surface, they didn’t seem to fit together in any specific way, the only common nominator being that they were all products of my musical imagination. Thinking about my personal journey from the moment when I first started taking steps on the the path of finding my life’s purpose, to the point in time where I was now, I realized that my compositions somehow parallelled with this development, and some of them were intensely actual steps on the path.”

Katja even found parrallels in the meaning of the cards in a classic Tarot deck. The 21 Major Arcana cards tradititionally symbolize the major initiations on a soul’s journey on Earth.

“However, I didn’t want to name my compositions after the Major Arcana cards (except one, called the Hanged Man), nor are they tightly bound to their exact symbolism in any way. Only the philosophy that they represent, which is universal anyway, is the same.”

The making of this album has been partly funded by ESEK, the Finnish Performing Music Promotion Centre.
