Description

"With gorgeously dark, terse horn arrangements, minor keys, and eerie gypsy chromatics along with a slinky latin rock bounce, the Brooklyn band’s music is danceable and also surprisingly deep." -- New York Music Daily

Notes

Karikatura is a Brooklyn-based indy world music band, combining sounds and storytelling arts from all over the world. Greatly influenced by the sounds of Latin, Eastern European, and Jamaican traditions, Karikatura forges a soundtrack to stories born from world-wide travel experiences. Infectious horn melodies soar over soulful vocals, while the rock solid rhythm section makes bodies move to constantly evolving grooves. They proudly bring their unique style and rocking energy into a huge range of settings, from Manhattan jazz bistros to Czech punk rock clubs, and concert hall stages the world over.

In January 2011 Karikatura embarked on a Muzon Worldwide tour with three international runs. First, 5 shows in Japan, promoting their debut EP "Muzon". This was followed by a 3-week Spring tour in Europe where the band played 9 different countries and 21 cities. They were met with such warmth and excitement that they returned to Europe for all of November to play 28 concerts in 30 days across more countries. Finally, to wrap up the year, Karikatura toured from New York to New Orleans.

Their new EP, Departures, with sounds and stories inspired by their travels, finds Karikatura honing their songcraft while exploring the sounds of cumbia and dub. It contains 4 brand new tracks as well as a remix by legendary dub producer Victor Rice.

"The Departures ep gives you an idea of how diverse this band has become. The opening track, Sleep of No Peace is a gypsy rock song that kicks off with a big riff from the baritone sax, which is this band’s not-so-secret weapon. The next song, Una Idea has a gypsy/flamenco rock groove with pinpoint dual horns and a dream about how a random encounter with an old guy gives the narrator a vision of a city where the 99% take charge and “politicos, criminals, police were swallowed whole…a new geography, oh what a dream.” Another flamenco-flavored tune, Red Shade works its way up to a swinging, practically ska beat with that killer horn section again and some especially tasty alto sax. It reminds a lot of the more psychedelic, musically adventurous side of Gogol Bordello. " - New York Music Daily
