Postcards from the British Empire (2012, Souvenir Music)
In 2012 Phenomenal Cat set themselves the challenge of releasing a brand new single every month of the year. The project epitomised the DIY punk aesthetic of the late 1970’s as the band recorded, performed, mixed, printed, illustrated, promoted, distributed and produced each and every single sold. The profit from each single went to a different charity each month.
Postcards from the British Empire was written as a loose concept album about 20th century England. Lyrically the 12 singles covered subjects such as love, war, politics, history, sex, advertising and pop culture. Musically the album was a patchwork, a post-modern collage of sounds, instruments, ideas and popular genres. The band developed and became known for a style of songwriting/performing that jumped fluidly from one idea/genre to another.
The project was a huge success and culminated in a performance at the famous Cavern Club, Liverpool in May 2013 as part of the global International Pop Overthrow Music Festival curated by David Bash (Not Lame Records).
