Description
Melodic, guitar-driven pop rock brimful with singalong choruses, gilded harmonies and a dash of 90's college rock flair.
Notes
Featuring the singles 'Night Stands Still', 'Turnaround' and 'Mexico', 'Terminal Optimist' is the second album by South African singer-songwriter Richard Kohler. It's a collection of 11 self-penned, melodic, 90's college rock inspired tracks that fuse under-the-skin hummable tunes with astute, sometimes wistful, always meticulously crafted lyrics. Think mid to late 80's R.E.M., with a modern twist. While tracks such as 'Mexico' and 'Turnaround' are genuinely unbridled in their positivity, it has to be said that few artists are as adept at shrouding themes of distance, separation and regret in aural blankets of optimism as Richard!
'Terminal Optimist' was recorded over a marathon 2 year long-distance stint between Singapore (where Richard is currently based) and his hometown studio in Durban (home as well to producer-extraordinaire Brent Quinton, also at the helm of Richard's first album, 2004's 'Revolution'). For album #3 Richard swears he will not use a studio 8000km from where he lives! Until then though, happy listening to Terminal Optimist.
