Description
A strong collection of 3 Bertoldi originals & 2 covers (Dylan & Waits) in R.X.'s acclaimed roots rock/americana style, with excellent support from his son, and 2 of Seattle's premier musicians--one of whom is also a top-notch audio engineer and producer.
Notes
This is a very solid 5-song collection of 3 Bertoldi originals and 2 covers ("Wagon Wheel" by Dylan/Secor and "Ol' '55" by Tom Waits)--all done in his acclaimed roots rock / americana style. He receives excellent support from two of Seattle's premier musicians on bass, electric guitar, and keyboards, and from his teenage son who adds his inspired drumming to four of the tunes. Bertoldi's work benefits from the warm upright bass lines of Keith Lowe (Bill Frisell, Fiona Apple, etc.) on both cover songs, and from the crisp electric guitar chops and tasteful keyboard backing throughout by Johnny Sangster. Mr. Sangster's proven recording and mixing skills (Mudhoney, The Posies, et al.) are a great match for Bertoldi's approach and delivery, and these tracks represent some of the reflective singer songwriters's finest recordings to date.
In the timely rocker, "When the Bullets Fly", the singer advises a new arrival to the U.S. (and listeners) to be aware of the prevalence of gun violence in the "land of milk and honey". His "In My Younger Days" is a fun rockabilly ride by which the narrator takes listeners (in hindsight) from Austin to Memphis to Las Vegas--with trouble and misadventure along the way--before finally landing on his feet back in Austin. The Bertoldi version of "Ol' '55" shows respect for the classic original by Tom Waits, but also offers its own particular lilting drive and includes some very welcome 2 and 3-part harmonies. Their rendition of "Wagon Wheel" is a rousing one and its hootenany vibe will likely inspire listeners to dance and/or sing along with every chorus. The closing song on the EP is "Guiding Lights", an alt-country groove in which the singer underscores the importance of keeping some perspective and focusing on what matters most, despite a world that offers endless distractions. Hopefully this 5-track EP will lead to more recordings and a full-album CD release in the not-too-distant future.
